Welcome to Science and Social Studies Adventures!
We are building a better future by making connections between what happens in research and society.
Science and Social Studies Adventures (SASSAk12) connects diverse K–12 students and educators with active researchers to engage in community-based education and research.
We build programs that create meaningful relationships between researchers and the communities they serve through two interconnected programs: SASSA in the Classroom and Preparing Researchers for Engaging the Public (PREP). SASSA in the Classroom brings research-driven, hands-on learning to K-12 classrooms, tailored to meet teachers’ goals and students’ curiosity. PREP trains researchers – especially graduate students and early career scholars – to share their work in ways that are relevant, engaging, and accessible.
We connect researchers with K–12 students to help both sides better understand the relationship between what happens in research and what happens in society. This is not a one-way model. We don’t believe science is something to be delivered to communities – it’s something that grows with them. Our work is rooted in reciprocity. K–12 students and teachers get access to inspiring, real-world learning opportunities. Researchers and volunteers gain vital communication skills and a deeper understanding of how their work can make a difference.
By building these connections, we foster not just learning, but belonging – in classrooms, in research spaces, and in society.

At SASSAk12, we believe science is more than collecting data and testing hypotheses. Science is a way of thinking, questioning, and connecting with the world, which is why we bring together diverse perspectives and expertise from within the community to enhance K–12 education. Whether in the classroom or in the field, our hands-on activities encourage the development of critical thinking skills and offer students innovative, inquiry-based approaches to learning complex subjects. These materials are also adaptable to accommodate various learning styles – not just those designed for mainstream settings.

One thing that sets us apart is that almost everything we build, we build together. The vast majority of our learning modules are custom designed in collaboration with educators or community partners to meet specific goals and needs. These are not off-the-shelf activities. Our projects and activities are shaped through dialogue and shared purpose. Some are later adapted for broader use (with permission from all collaborators), while others are intentionally community-specific. Even when a PREP participant doesn’t yet have a school partnership, we help them build public-facing learning tools from their research. These efforts support lasting skills in communication and community connection. Collaborative content building means K-12 students and teachers gain access to exciting, relevant learning experiences. Researchers deepen their impact, gain new insight about their own research, and build lasting relationships.
What We Mean by Science
For us, science encompasses different ways diverse people explore and respond to phenomena in our natural and social worlds; social studies is concerned with the implications of these phenomena on past and present human groups. We further emphasize this connection by advocating K-12 connection to active research through science education.
Our Impact so far…
12,550
students served across all SASSAk12 events since 2015.
90
graduate and undergraduate researchers participating in our “Preparing Researchers for Engaging the Public” (PREP) program.
53
parent & community member volunteers.
Up to this point, SASSAk12 has been entirely volunteer oriented, but due to our growth with regards to students, schools, and other public programs served, we are transitioning to seek donations to better support the continued growth of our community.
